U.S. Zinc Import Price per Ton in August 2022
In August 2022, the zinc price per ton stood at $3.7K (CIF, US), remaining relatively unchanged against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2022 an increase of 6.2% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $4.0K per ton in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to August 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2022, the highest price was recorded for prices from Peru ($3.8K per ton) and Canada ($3.8K per ton), while the price for Mexico ($3.6K per ton) and South Korea ($3.6K per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Peru (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Zinc Imports
In August 2022, the amount of zinc imported into the United States skyrocketed to 68K tons, picking up by 46% compared with July 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated prominent growth from January 2022 to August 2022: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +5.6% over the last seven-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2022 figures, imports decreased by -12.7% against June 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2022 when imports increased by 47% m-o-m. As a result, imports attained the peak of 78K tons. From July 2022 to August 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, zinc imports surged to $252M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. In general, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from January 2022 to August 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +6.4% over the last seven months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2022 figures, imports decreased by -18.4% against June 2022 indices.
U.S. Zinc Imports by Country
In August 2022, Canada (34K tons) constituted the largest supplier of zinc to the United States, with a 50% share of total imports. Moreover, zinc imports from Canada exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Korea (17K tons), twofold. Kazakhstan (7.7K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Canada was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: South Korea (+104.4% per month) and Kazakhstan (0.0% per month).
In value terms, Canada ($129M) constituted the largest supplier of zinc to the United States, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($61M), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with an 11% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from Canada stood at +1.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: South Korea (+86.9% per month) and Kazakhstan (0.0% per month).
