U.S. Animal Fats Import Price per Ton in August 2022
In August 2022, the animal fats price per ton stood at $33.5K (CIF, US), picking up by 15% against the previous month. Over the period from January 2022 to August 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +4.8%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in May 2022 an increase of 19% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in August 2022.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2022, the country with the highest price was Japan ($38.8K per ton), while the price for China ($25.4K per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+5.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Animal Fats Imports
In August 2022, after two months of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of animal fats and oils, when their volume increased by 17% to 204 tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a noticeable setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in May 2022 when imports increased by 125% m-o-m.
In value terms, animal fats imports surged to $6.9M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. In general, total imports indicated a mild increase from January 2022 to August 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.5% over the last seven-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2022 figures, imports increased by +34.9% against July 2022 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in May 2022 when imports increased by 168% month-to-month. As a result, imports reached the peak of $7.6M. From June 2022 to August 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
U.S. Animal Fats Imports by Country
In August 2022, Norway (170 tons) constituted the largest animal fats supplier to the United States, with a 83% share of total imports. Moreover, animal fats imports from Norway exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (25 tons), sevenfold.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Norway stood at +9.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: China (-17.3% per month) and Japan (-1.8% per month).
In value terms, Norway ($5.8M) constituted the largest supplier of animal fats to the United States, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($631K), with a 9.2% share of total imports.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from Norway totaled +10.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: China (-13.3% per month) and Japan (-2.4% per month).
