China Banana Import Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the banana price stood at $609 per ton (CIF, China), stabilizing at the previous month. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2022 an increase of 5.4% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $690 per ton in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to September 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2022, the countries with the highest prices were Ecuador ($742 per ton) and the Philippines ($611 per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($516 per ton) and Lao People's Democratic Republic ($544 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ecuador (+2.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
China Banana Imports
In September 2022, purchases abroad of bananas was finally on the rise to reach 122K tons after four months of decline. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 with an increase of 48% month-to-month. Imports peaked at 223K tons in April 2022; however, from May 2022 to September 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, banana imports rose significantly to $74M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a perceptible decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 41% against the previous month. Imports peaked at 143K tons in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to September 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
China Banana Imports by Country
In September 2022, the Philippines (65K tons) constituted the largest supplier of banana to China, with a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, banana imports from the Philippines exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Cambodia (26K tons), twofold. Ecuador (13K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume from the Philippines totaled -1.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Cambodia (-0.7% per month) and Ecuador (-2.9% per month).
In value terms, the Philippines ($40M) constituted the largest supplier of banana to China, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cambodia ($15M), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Ecuador, with a 13% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from the Philippines stood at -2.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Cambodia (-3.9% per month) and Ecuador (-0.7% per month).
