U.S. Banana Import Price per Ton in August 2022
In August 2022, the banana price per ton stood at $498.5 (CIF, US), almost unchanged from the previous month. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in February 2022 when the average import price increased by 1.6% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $499.9 per ton in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to August 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2022, the highest price was recorded for prices from Colombia ($572.0 per ton) and Costa Rica ($541.0 per ton), while the price for Ecuador ($468.0 per ton) and Guatemala ($472.0 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ecuador (+1.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Banana Imports
After two months of decline, overseas purchases of bananas increased by 9.3% to 412K tons in August 2022. The total import volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.8% over the period from January 2022 to August 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 with an increase of 14% m-o-m. As a result, imports reached the peak of 428K tons. From April 2022 to August 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, banana imports rose markedly to $205M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +2.6% from January 2022 to August 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain months. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 when imports increased by 16% against the previous month. As a result, imports attained the peak of $209M. From April 2022 to August 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
U.S. Banana Imports by Country
In August 2022, Guatemala (184K tons) constituted the largest banana supplier to the United States, with a 45% share of total imports. Moreover, banana imports from Guatemala exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Costa Rica (53K tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Ecuador (52K tons), with a 13% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Guatemala amounted to +3.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Costa Rica (-1.7% per month) and Ecuador (-5.1% per month).
In value terms, Guatemala ($87M) constituted the largest supplier of banana to the United States, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Costa Rica ($28M), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Ecuador, with a 12% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from Guatemala totaled +4.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Costa Rica (-0.6% per month) and Ecuador (-3.9% per month).
