Bottled Water Prices in China

China Bottled Water Export Price in September 2022

In September 2022, the bottled water price amounted to $0.9 per thousand litres (FOB, China), leveling off at the previous month. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in July 2022 when the average export price increased by 23% month-to-month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $1.0 per thousand litres. From August 2022 to September 2022, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($0.9 per thousand litres), while the average price for exports to Taiwan (Chinese) amounted to $0.3 per thousand litres.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Taiwan (Chinese) (-2.0%).

China Bottled Water Export Prices by Type

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major types of exported product. In September 2022, the product with the highest price was mineral or aerated waters ($214 per thousand litres), while the average price for exports of non-mineral or non-aerated waters totaled $0.8 per thousand litres.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: non-mineral or non-aerated water (+9.3%).

China Bottled Water Exports

In September 2022, exports of bottled waters from China fell to 76B litres, dropping by -1.7% compared with the previous month. Overall, exports, however, posted significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in February 2022 when exports increased by 835% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at 89B litres in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to September 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bottled water exports shrank modestly to $66M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in February 2022 with an increase of 768% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at 68M litres in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to September 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

China Bottled Water Exports by Type

Non-mineral or non-aerated waters (76B litres) was the largest type of bottled water exported from China, accounting for a 99.9% share of total exports. It was followed by mineral or aerated waters (26M litres), with less than 0.1% share of total exports.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of export of non-mineral or non-aerated waters amounted to +30.9%.

In value terms, non-mineral or non-aerated waters ($61M) remains the largest type of bottled water exported from China, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by mineral or aerated waters ($5.6M), with an 8.4% share of total exports.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the export volume of non-mineral or non-aerated waters stood at +43.1%.

China Bottled Water Exports by Country

Hong Kong SAR (68B litres) was the main destination for bottled water exports from China, accounting for a 89% share of total exports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (620M litres), with a 0.8% share of total exports.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume to Hong Kong SAR amounted to +324.7%.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($58M) remains the key foreign market for bottled water exports from China, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Taiwan (Chinese) ($201K), with a 0.3% share of total exports.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value to Hong Kong SAR stood at +99.8%.
