U.S. Bread and Bakery Import Price per Ton in May 2022
In May 2022, the bread and bakery price per ton stood at $3.8K (CIF, US), rising by 4.3% against the previous month. Over the period from January 2022 to May 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.7%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In May 2022, the country with the highest price was France ($5.8K per ton), while the price for Mexico ($2.2K per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to May 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+4.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Bread and Bakery Import Prices by Type
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplied products. In July 2022, the product with the highest price was crispbread, rusks and toasted bread ($4.7K per ton), while the price for gingerbread, sweet biscuits and waffles ($3.5K per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by gingerbread, sweet biscuit and waffle (+2.0%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Bread and Bakery Imports
Bread and bakery imports into the United States rose to 195K tons in July 2022, growing by 4.5% against the month before. The total import volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.0% over the period from January 2022 to July 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 20% month-to-month. As a result, imports reached the peak of 211K tons. From April 2022 to July 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, bread and bakery imports rose slightly to $752M (IndexBox estimates) in July 2022. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +2.6% from January 2022 to July 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain months. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 20% month-to-month. As a result, imports attained the peak of $766M. From April 2022 to July 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
U.S. Bread and Bakery Imports by Type
Fresh bread and miscellaneous bakery (121K tons), gingerbread, sweet biscuits and waffles (71K tons) and crispbread, rusks and toasted bread (3.2K tons) were the main products of bread and bakery imports to the United States.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the biggest increases were in gingerbread, sweet biscuit and waffle (with a CAGR of +1.8%), while purchases for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, fresh bread and miscellaneous bakery ($491M) constituted the largest type of bread and bakery supplied to the United States, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by gingerbread, sweet biscuits and waffles ($245M), with a 33% share of total imports.
U.S. Bread and Bakery Imports by Country
Canada (78K tons), Mexico (68K tons) and Italy (5.6K tons) were the main suppliers of bread and bakery imports to the United States, together accounting for 78% of total imports. India, France and China lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 6.3%.
From January 2022 to May 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +5.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Canada ($368M) constituted the largest supplier of bread and bakery to the United States, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mexico ($148M), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 4.3% share.
From January 2022 to May 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from Canada totaled +4.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Mexico (-1.3% per month) and Italy (+4.7% per month).
