China Buckwheat Export Price in August 2022
In August 2022, the buckwheat price stood at $1,038 per ton (FOB, China), dropping by -8.3% against the previous month. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 an increase of 19% month-to-month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $1,273 per ton. From June 2022 to August 2022, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Norway ($2,250 per ton), while the average price for exports to Japan ($964 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From February 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+6.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
China Buckwheat Exports
In August 2022, buckwheat exports from China skyrocketed to 521 tons, jumping by 60% against July 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a mild slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in June 2022 with an increase of 1,449% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at 2.1K tons in April 2022; however, from May 2022 to August 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, buckwheat exports skyrocketed to $541K (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2022 when exports increased by 1,371% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at 2.2K tons in April 2022; however, from May 2022 to August 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
China Buckwheat Exports by Country
Japan (482 tons) was the main destination for buckwheat exports from China, accounting for a 92% share of total exports. Moreover, buckwheat exports to Japan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Norway (19 tons), more than tenfold.
From February 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume to Japan amounted to -2.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Norway (-29.3% per month) and Australia (+64.0% per month).
In value terms, Japan ($464K) remains the key foreign market for buckwheat exports from China, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Norway ($43K), with a 7.9% share of total exports.
From February 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value to Japan amounted to -2.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Norway (-27.7% per month) and Australia (+56.7% per month).
