China Carbon Electrode Export Price in August 2022
In August 2022, the carbon electrode price amounted to $1,643 per ton (FOB, China), surging by 3.2% against the previous month. Over the period from January 2022 to August 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2022 an increase of 14% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum in August 2022.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was South Korea ($3,250 per ton), while the average price for exports to Indonesia ($911 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (+11.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Carbon Electrode Export Prices by Type
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major types of exported product. In August 2022, the product with the highest price was carbon electrodes for furnaces ($3,498 per ton), while the average price for exports of carbon electrodes not for furnaces amounted to $1,328 per ton.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: carbon electrode not for furnaces (+4.5%).
China Carbon Electrode Exports
In August 2022, exports of carbon electrodes from China dropped dramatically to 183K tons, shrinking by -24.6% on the month before. Over the period under review, exports saw a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2022 with an increase of 35% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at 251K tons in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to August 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, carbon electrode exports contracted notably to $300M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2022 with an increase of 33% m-o-m. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $386M, and then fell markedly in the following month.
China Carbon Electrode Exports by Type
Carbon electrodes not for furnaces (156K tons) was the largest type of carbon electrode exported from China, with a 85% share of total exports. Moreover, carbon electrodes not for furnaces exceeded the volume of the second product type, carbon electrodes for furnaces (27K tons), sixfold.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of export of carbon electrodes not for furnaces totaled -1.7%.
In value terms, carbon electrodes not for furnaces ($207M) remains the largest type of carbon electrode exported from China, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by carbon electrodes for furnaces ($93M), with a 31% share of total exports.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the export volume of carbon electrodes not for furnaces amounted to +2.7%.
China Carbon Electrode Exports by Country
Malaysia (39K tons), Russia (32K tons) and Norway (30K tons) were the main destinations of carbon electrode exports from China, together accounting for 55% of total exports. Iceland, Canada, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, India, South Korea, Kazakhstan and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Indonesia (with a CAGR of +64.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for carbon electrode exported from China were Russia ($54M), Malaysia ($46M) and Norway ($41M), together comprising 47% of total exports. These countries were followed by Iceland, Canada, South Korea, India, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan and Indonesia, which together accounted for a further 33%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Iceland, with a CAGR of +37.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
