China Carbon Export Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the carbon price stood at $1,632 per ton (FOB, China), standing approximately at the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 an increase of 6.3% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $1,667 per ton in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to September 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In September 2022, the highest price was recorded for prices to the United States ($2,037 per ton) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($1,818 per ton), while the average price for exports to Thailand ($1,516 per ton) and Serbia ($1,541 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+3.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Carbon Exports
In September 2022, overseas shipments of carbon (carbon blacks and other forms of carbon) decreased by -10.6% to 64K tons, falling for the fourth month in a row after three months of growth. Overall, exports, however, showed mild growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 46% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at 105K tons in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to September 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, carbon exports fell to $104M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when exports increased by 56% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at 174K tons in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to September 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
China Carbon Exports by Country
Thailand (19K tons), Vietnam (16K tons) and Indonesia (5.3K tons) were the main destinations of carbon exports from China, together accounting for 63% of total exports. Germany, Japan, Mexico, Hungary, the United States, Taiwan (Chinese), Serbia and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the biggest increases were in Serbia (with a CAGR of +323.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for carbon exported from China were Thailand ($29M), Vietnam ($25M) and Indonesia ($8.6M), together accounting for 60% of total exports. Germany, Japan, Mexico, Hungary, the United States, Taiwan (Chinese), Serbia and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.
Among the main countries of destination, Serbia, with a CAGR of +269.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
