U.S. Carpet Import Price in June 2022
In June 2022, the carpet price amounted to $59 per square meter (CIF, US), which is down by -6% against the previous month. Over the period from January 2022 to June 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +5.7%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2022 an increase of 31% month-to-month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $63.1K per thousand square meters, and then declined in the following month.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2022, the country with the highest price was Spain ($402 per square meter), while the price for Vietnam ($6.5 per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to June 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+140.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Carpet Imports
In June 2022, imports of knotted carpets and other textile floor coverings into the United States fell rapidly to 527K square meters, shrinking by -20.5% on the month before. Over the period under review, imports saw a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2022 with an increase of 19% m-o-m. As a result, imports attained the peak of 814K square meters. From May 2022 to June 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, carpet imports fell markedly to $31M (IndexBox estimates) in June 2022. In general, total imports indicated a measured increase from January 2022 to June 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +3.3% over the last five-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on June 2022 figures, imports decreased by -25.3% against May 2022 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 25% month-to-month. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at 42M square meters in May 2022, and then contracted rapidly in the following month.
U.S. Carpet Imports by Country
In June 2022, India (368K square meters) constituted the largest supplier of carpet to the United States, accounting for a 70% share of total imports. Moreover, carpet imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Pakistan (54K square meters), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Turkey (45K square meters), with an 8.5% share.
From January 2022 to June 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from India totaled -1.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Pakistan (+5.1% per month) and Turkey (-6.1% per month).
In value terms, India ($19M) constituted the largest supplier of carpet to the United States, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Pakistan ($4.1M), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Nepal, with a 13% share.
From January 2022 to June 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from India stood at +2.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Pakistan (+12.8% per month) and Nepal (+2.7% per month).
