China Caviar (Salmon) And Caviar Substitutes Export Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the caviar (salmon) and caviar substitutes price stood at $15.5 per kg (FOB, China), picking up by 9.7% against the previous month. Over the period from January 2022 to September 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2022 when the average export price increased by 30% against the previous month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $16,104 per ton. From May 2022 to September 2022, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Chile ($30.5 per kg), while the average price for exports to Japan ($10.7 per kg) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Chile (+8.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In September 2022, approximately 381 tons of caviar (salmon) and caviar substitutes were exported from China; which is down by -3.9% compared with the previous month. In general, exports recorded a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 58% against the previous month. The exports peaked at 530 tons in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to September 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, caviar (salmon) and caviar substitutes exports expanded markedly to $5.9M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. Overall, exports recorded a mild downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in April 2022 with an increase of 61% month-to-month. The exports peaked at 6.7K tons in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to September 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Japan (223 tons) was the main destination for caviar (salmon) and caviar substitutes exports from China, with a 58% share of total exports. Moreover, caviar (salmon) and caviar substitutes exports to Japan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Vietnam (58 tons), fourfold. Malaysia (20 tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.3% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume to Japan amounted to -7.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+35.0% per month) and Malaysia (+10.7% per month).
In value terms, the largest markets for caviar (salmon) and caviar substitutes exported from China were Japan ($2.4M), Vietnam ($1.2M) and Malaysia ($450K), together comprising 69% of total exports. These countries were followed by Italy, the Philippines, the United States, Chile, Brunei Darussalam, Georgia, Canada and Taiwan (Chinese), which together accounted for a further 29%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Brunei Darussalam, with a CAGR of +138.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
