China Chemical Wood Pulp Import Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the chemical wood pulp price amounted to $862 per ton (CIF, China), with an increase of 2.7% against the previous month. Over the last eight months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +3.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in April 2022 when the average import price increased by 7.5% against the previous month. The import price peaked in September 2022.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2022, the countries with the highest prices were the United States ($1,006 per ton) and Canada ($975 per ton), while the price for Brazil ($802 per ton) and Indonesia ($805 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+4.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Chemical Wood Pulp Import Prices by Type
Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was bleached sulphite pulp ($966 per ton), while the price for unbleached sulphite pulp ($504 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by bleached sulphate pulp (+3.7%), while the prices for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.
China Chemical Wood Pulp Imports
Chemical wood pulp imports into China reduced slightly to 1.9M tons in September 2022, waning by -2.6% on August 2022 figures. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a slight slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in August 2022 when imports increased by 26% m-o-m. Imports peaked at 2.1M tons in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to September 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, chemical wood pulp imports amounted to $1.6B (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +2.3% from January 2022 to September 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in August 2022 with an increase of 31% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in September 2022.
China Chemical Wood Pulp Imports by Type
In September 2022, bleached sulphate pulp (1.8M tons) was the main type of chemical wood pulp supplied to China, with a 93% share of total imports. Moreover, bleached sulphate pulp exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, unbleached sulphate pulp (123K tons), more than tenfold. Bleached sulphite pulp (944 tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with less than 0.1% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of bleached sulphate pulp stood at -1.2%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: unbleached sulphate pulp (-1.3% per month) and bleached sulphite pulp (+8.7% per month).
In value terms, bleached sulphate pulp ($1.5B) constituted the largest type of chemical wood pulp supplied to China, comprising 94% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by unbleached sulphate pulp ($105M), with a 6.4% share of total imports. It was followed by bleached sulphite pulp, with a 0.1% share.
China Chemical Wood Pulp Imports by Country
In September 2022, Brazil (699K tons) constituted the largest supplier of chemical wood pulp to China, accounting for a 37% share of total imports. Moreover, chemical wood pulp imports from Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Indonesia (333K tons), twofold. Chile (181K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.5% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Brazil was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Indonesia (-2.3% per month) and Chile (-4.3% per month).
In value terms, Brazil ($560M) constituted the largest supplier of chemical wood pulp to China, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($268M), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Chile, with a 10% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from Brazil stood at +3.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Indonesia (+1.5% per month) and Chile (-1.1% per month).
