U.S. Chemical Wood Pulp Export Price per Ton in August 2022
In August 2022, the chemical wood pulp price per ton stood at $907.4 (FOB, US), picking up by 3% against the previous month. Over the last seven-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.0%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in June 2022 when the average export price increased by 3.9% month-to-month. The export price peaked in August 2022.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Turkey ($1.2K per ton), while the average price for exports to Mexico ($467.0 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Turkey (+3.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Chemical Wood Pulp Export Prices by Type
Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was bleached sulphate pulp ($913.8 per ton), while the average price for exports of unbleached sulphite pulp ($260.4 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: unbleached sulphate pulp (+4.0%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Chemical Wood Pulp Exports
In August 2022, approximately 709K tons of chemical wood pulp were exported from the United States; jumping by 20% against the previous month. The total export volume increased at an average monthly rate of +4.4% from January 2022 to August 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, chemical wood pulp exports surged to $643M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. The total export value increased at an average monthly rate of +5.5% over the period from January 2022 to August 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
U.S. Chemical Wood Pulp Exports by Type
Bleached sulphate pulp (682K tons) was the largest type of chemical wood pulp exported from the United States, with a 96% share of total exports. Moreover, bleached sulphate pulp exceeded the volume of the second product type, unbleached sulphate pulp (24K tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by bleached sulphite pulp (2.2K tons), with a 0.3% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of export of bleached sulphate pulp amounted to +4.4%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: unbleached sulphate pulp (+5.0% per month) and bleached sulphite pulp (+5.8% per month).
In value terms, bleached sulphate pulp ($623M) remains the largest type of chemical wood pulp exported from the United States, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by unbleached sulphate pulp ($19M), with a 2.9% share of total exports. It was followed by bleached sulphite pulp, with a 0.2% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the export volume of bleached sulphate pulp totaled +5.4%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: unbleached sulphate pulp (+9.2% per month) and bleached sulphite pulp (+6.5% per month).
U.S. Chemical Wood Pulp Exports by Country
China (133K tons), Mexico (100K tons) and Japan (61K tons) were the main destinations of chemical wood pulp exports from the United States, together comprising 41% of total exports. Canada, the Netherlands, Indonesia, Turkey, India, Italy, Germany, South Korea, Spain, Colombia, Poland and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Colombia (with a CAGR of +11.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for chemical wood pulp exported from the United States were China ($134M), Japan ($70M) and Mexico ($47M), together comprising 39% of total exports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Turkey, Indonesia, Canada, India, Italy, Germany, Spain, South Korea, Colombia, Poland and Belgium, which together accounted for a further 39%.
Turkey, with a CAGR of +14.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
