China Chicken Meat Import Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the chicken meat price stood at $3,833 per ton (CIF, China), remaining constant against the previous month. Overall, import price indicated a moderate expansion from January 2022 to September 2022: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +4.7% over the last eight months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2022 figures, chicken meat import price increased by +47.9% against February 2022 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in August 2022 when the average import price increased by 14% month-to-month. The import price peaked in September 2022.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Thailand ($5,106 per ton), while the price for Turkey ($2,200 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+5.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Chicken Meat Import Prices by Type
Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was frozen cuts of chicken ($3,855 per ton), while the price for frozen whole chickens totaled $1,732 per ton.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by frozen chicken cut (+4.8%), while the prices for the other product experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Chicken Meat Imports
In September 2022, the amount of chicken meat imported into China contracted to 110K tons, with a decrease of -1.7% on the month before. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 12% month-to-month. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 118K tons in April 2022; however, from May 2022 to September 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, chicken meat imports dropped to $421M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. In general, total imports indicated moderate growth from January 2022 to September 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +3.8% over the last eight months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2022 figures, imports increased by +66.8% against February 2022 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in June 2022 when imports increased by 24% month-to-month. Imports peaked at 425K tons in August 2022, and then declined in the following month.
China Chicken Meat Imports by Type
In September 2022, frozen cuts of chicken (109K tons) was the main type of chicken meat supplied to China, accounting for a 99% share of total imports. It was followed by frozen whole chickens (1.2K tons), with a 1.1% share of total imports.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of frozen cuts of chicken was relatively modest.
In value terms, frozen cuts of chicken ($419M) constituted the largest type of chicken meat supplied to China, comprising 100% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by frozen whole chickens ($2M), with a 0.5% share of total imports.
China Chicken Meat Imports by Country
Brazil (41K tons), the United States (25K tons) and Russia (13K tons) were the main suppliers of chicken meat imports to China, with a combined 72% share of total imports. Thailand, Argentina, Belarus and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the biggest increases were in Thailand (with a CAGR of +9.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Brazil ($137M), the United States ($117M) and Thailand ($55M) were the largest chicken meat suppliers to China, with a combined 73% share of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, Thailand, with a CAGR of +14.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
