China Chocolate and Confectionery Import Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the chocolate and confectionery price stood at $5,339 per ton (CIF, China), picking up by 19% against the previous month. Over the last eight months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.9%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2022, the country with the highest price was the United States ($13.7 per kg), while the price for Ghana ($2,147 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+17.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Chocolate and Confectionery Imports
Chocolate and confectionery imports into China declined to 16K tons in September 2022, waning by -14.1% on the previous month's figure. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 41% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at 19K tons in August 2022, and then declined in the following month.
In value terms, chocolate and confectionery imports expanded modestly to $86M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. In general, total imports indicated modest growth from January 2022 to September 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.3% over the last eight months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2022 figures, imports increased by +32.6% against July 2022 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in August 2022 with an increase of 29% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in September 2022.
China Chocolate and Confectionery Imports by Country
Malaysia (2.9K tons), Singapore (2.2K tons) and Indonesia (2.1K tons) were the main suppliers of chocolate and confectionery imports to China, with a combined 45% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Ghana, Russia, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, France, the United States, the Netherlands and Thailand, which together accounted for a further 43%.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the biggest increases were in Switzerland (with a CAGR of +16.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Malaysia ($13M), Italy ($12M) and Singapore ($8.3M) were the largest chocolate and confectionery suppliers to China, with a combined 39% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Indonesia, Belgium, Switzerland, Russia, France, the United States, Ghana, the Netherlands and Thailand, which together accounted for a further 44%.
Among the main suppliers, Switzerland, with a CAGR of +17.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
