U.S. Chocolate Import Price per Ton in August 2022
In August 2022, the chocolate price per ton stood at $5.0K (CIF, US), picking up by 4.8% against the previous month. Over the period from January 2022 to August 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2022 when the average import price increased by 7.2% month-to-month. The import price peaked in August 2022.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2022, the country with the highest price was Poland ($12.0K per ton), while the price for Mexico ($3.3K per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+3.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Chocolate Imports
In August 2022, the amount of chocolate and cocoa products imported into the United States rose to 73K tons, growing by 2.1% on July 2022. The total import volume increased at an average monthly rate of +3.5% from January 2022 to August 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain months. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 21% against the previous month. Imports peaked in August 2022.
In value terms, chocolate imports rose significantly to $365M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +4.7% over the period from January 2022 to August 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 18% month-to-month. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in August 2022.
U.S. Chocolate Imports by Country
Canada (35K tons), Mexico (21K tons) and Germany (2.8K tons) were the main suppliers of chocolate imports to the United States, together accounting for 80% of total imports. These countries were followed by Belgium, Italy, Switzerland and Poland, which together accounted for a further 8.4%.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Switzerland (with a CAGR of +12.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Canada ($167M) constituted the largest supplier of chocolate to the United States, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mexico ($69M), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 5.1% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from Canada stood at +2.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Mexico (+9.0% per month) and Germany (+12.8% per month).
