China Clay Export Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the clay price stood at $290 per ton (FOB, China), increasing by 7.3% against the previous month. Over the last eight months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.5%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in June 2022 an increase of 17% against the previous month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $336 per ton. From July 2022 to September 2022, the the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($629 per ton), while the average price for exports to Taiwan (Chinese) ($54.0 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+11.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Clay Export Prices by Type
Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was bentonite ($498 per ton), while the average price for exports of kaolin and kaolinic clays ($219 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: bentonite (+4.6%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Clay Exports
In September 2022, approximately 217K tons of clays were exported from China; falling by -12.6% compared with the previous month. Over the period under review, exports showed a pronounced decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 65% month-to-month. The exports peaked at 256K tons in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to September 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, clay exports reduced to $63M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 72% month-to-month. The exports peaked at 70K tons in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to September 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
China Clay Exports by Type
Kaolin and kaolinic clays (107K tons), fireclay (75K tons) and bentonite (26K tons) were the main products of clay exports from China, together comprising 96% of total exports.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the major product types, was attained by fireclay (with a CAGR of -1.6%), while the other products experienced a decline.
In value terms, the most traded types of clays in China were kaolin and kaolinic clays ($23M), fireclay ($23M) and bentonite ($13M), with a combined 95% share of total exports. Clays for construction and industrial use lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 5.1%.
Among the main product categories, kaolin, with a CAGR of +2.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.
China Clay Exports by Country
Taiwan (Chinese) (60K tons), India (33K tons) and Japan (18K tons) were the main destinations of clay exports from China, together accounting for 51% of total exports. Vietnam, Malaysia, the Netherlands, South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, Croatia, the United States, Argentina and Saudi Arabia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Croatia (with a CAGR of +53.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, India ($11M), Vietnam ($8.2M) and Malaysia ($4.4M) constituted the largest markets for clay exported from China worldwide, with a combined 37% share of total exports. These countries were followed by South Korea, Japan, Taiwan (Chinese), the Netherlands, Indonesia, the United States, Thailand, Croatia, Argentina and Saudi Arabia, which together accounted for a further 43%.
Croatia, with a CAGR of +49.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
