China Coal Other Than Lingite Import Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the coal other than lingite price stood at $153 per ton (CIF, China), reducing by -15.1% against the previous month. Overall, the import price showed a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2022 an increase of 8.3% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $220 per ton in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to September 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2022, the country with the highest price was Canada ($297 per ton), while the price for Australia ($123 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (+0.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
China Coal Other Than Lingite Imports
In September 2022, purchases abroad of coal other than lingites increased by 10% to 17M tons, rising for the third month in a row after two months of decline. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in April 2022 when imports increased by 32% month-to-month. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in September 2022.
In value terms, coal other than lingite imports shrank to $2.6B (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a noticeable slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2022 when imports increased by 43% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at 3.4M tons in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to September 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
China Coal Other Than Lingite Imports by Country
Russia (6.2M tons), Indonesia (5.6M tons) and Mongolia (4.2M tons) were the main suppliers of coal other than lingite imports to China, with a combined 93% share of total imports.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Mongolia (with a CAGR of +24.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest coal other than lingite suppliers to China were Russia ($972M), Indonesia ($762M) and Mongolia ($588M), with a combined 88% share of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, Mongolia, with a CAGR of +21.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
