China Coal Import Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the coal price amounted to $120 per ton (CIF, China), falling by -14% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price saw a pronounced setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2022 an increase of 10% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $172 per ton in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to September 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Canada ($297 per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($98.0 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mongolia (-1.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
China Coal Import Prices by Type
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplied products. In September 2022, the product with the highest price was coal other than lingite ($153 per ton), while the price for lignite totaled $84.7 per ton.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by lignite (-1.7%).
China Coal Imports
In September 2022, supplies from abroad of coal increased by 12% to 33M tons, rising for the third consecutive month after two months of decline. In general, imports showed a noticeable expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 46% m-o-m. Imports peaked in September 2022.
In value terms, coal imports dropped slightly to $4B (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2022 with an increase of 58% month-to-month. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at 4.2M tons in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to September 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
China Coal Imports by Type
Coal other than lingite (17M tons) and lignite (16M tons) were the main products of coal imports to China.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the major product types, was attained by lignite (with a CAGR of +8.7%).
In value terms, the most traded types of coal in China were coal other than lingite ($2.6B) and lignite ($1.3B).
China Coal Imports by Country
In September 2022, Indonesia (21M tons) constituted the largest coal supplier to China, with a 63% share of total imports. Moreover, coal imports from Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Russia (7M tons), threefold. Mongolia (4.2M tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 13% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Indonesia amounted to +6.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Russia (+7.5% per month) and Mongolia (+24.3% per month).
In value terms, the largest coal suppliers to China were Indonesia ($2B), Russia ($1B) and Mongolia ($589M), together comprising 92% of total imports.
Mongolia, with a CAGR of +22.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
