Cocoa Powder Prices in China

China Cocoa Powder Import Price in September 2022

In September 2022, the cocoa powder price amounted to $3,138 per ton (CIF, China), shrinking by -3.2% against the previous month. Over the period from January 2022 to September 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.4%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in February 2022 when the average import price increased by 11% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $3,242 per ton in August 2022, and then contracted slightly in the following month.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($3,650 per ton), while the price for Cambodia ($522 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+2.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

China Cocoa Powder Imports

In September 2022, purchases abroad of cocoa powder (not sweetened) decreased by -14.5% to 4.2K tons, falling for the second consecutive month after two months of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 48% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at 5.1K tons in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to September 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cocoa powder imports declined remarkably to $13M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. In general, total imports indicated a notable increase from January 2022 to September 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +2.0% over the last eight-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2022 figures, imports decreased by -17.6% against July 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 with an increase of 33% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at 16K tons in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to September 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

China Cocoa Powder Imports by Country

Malaysia (1.5K tons), Indonesia (1.1K tons) and Ghana (779 tons) were the main suppliers of cocoa powder imports to China, with a combined 80% share of total imports. Singapore, the Netherlands and Cambodia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the biggest increases were in Cambodia (with a CAGR of +18.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest cocoa powder suppliers to China were Malaysia ($5.6M), Indonesia ($3.2M) and Singapore ($1.6M), with a combined 77% share of total imports. Ghana, the Netherlands and Cambodia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.

Cambodia, with a CAGR of +19.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
