U.S. Confectionery Import Price per Ton in July 2022
In July 2022, the confectionery price per ton stood at $4.0K (CIF, US), rising by 5% against the previous month. Over the last six months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.0%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2022, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($5.7K per ton), while the price for Brazil ($2.6K per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+3.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Confectionery Import Prices by Type
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplied products. In August 2022, the product with the highest price was chocolate and confectionery ($4.5K per ton), while the price for candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery amounted to $3.2K per ton.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery (+1.1%).
U.S. Confectionery Imports
In August 2022, imports of confectionery into the United States rose significantly to 191K tons, increasing by 10% compared with the month before. The total import volume increased at an average monthly rate of +3.5% over the period from January 2022 to August 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 when imports increased by 31% month-to-month. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in August 2022.
In value terms, confectionery imports expanded remarkably to $762M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +4.5% from January 2022 to August 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 with an increase of 28% m-o-m. Imports peaked in August 2022.
U.S. Confectionery Imports by Type
Chocolate and confectionery (113K tons) and candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery (78K tons) were the main products of confectionery imports to the United States.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the biggest increases were in chocolate and confectionery (with a CAGR of +3.9%).
In value terms, chocolate and confectionery ($509M) constituted the largest type of confectionery supplied to the United States, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery ($253M), with a 33% share of total imports.
U.S. Confectionery Imports by Country
Mexico (50K tons), Canada (46K tons) and Germany (9.3K tons) were the main suppliers of confectionery imports to the United States, with a combined 61% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Cote d'Ivoire, Turkey, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Spain, Ghana, Indonesia, China, Brazil and Belgium, which together accounted for a further 28%.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Malaysia (with a CAGR of +16.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Canada ($216M), Mexico ($146M) and Germany ($41M) constituted the largest confectionery suppliers to the United States, with a combined 59% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Cote d'Ivoire, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Turkey, Indonesia, Spain, Belgium, China, Ghana and Brazil, which together accounted for a further 25%.
Malaysia, with a CAGR of +18.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
