U.S. Couscous Import Price per Ton in August 2022
In August 2022, the couscous price per ton stood at $2.3K (CIF, US), rising by 23% against the previous month. Over the last seven-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.8%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Italy ($5.3K per ton), while the price for Tunisia ($1.5K per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+11.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Couscous Imports
In August 2022, supplies from abroad of couscous decreased by -28.2% to 472 tons, falling for the fourth month in a row after two months of growth. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when imports increased by 43% against the previous month.
In value terms, couscous imports reduced to $1.1M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 48% m-o-m.
U.S. Couscous Imports by Country
In August 2022, Canada (240 tons) constituted the largest supplier of couscous to the United States, with a 51% share of total imports. Moreover, couscous imports from Canada exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Israel (120 tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by France (31 tons), with a 6.5% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Canada stood at -3.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Israel (+10.3% per month) and France (+28.0% per month).
In value terms, the largest couscous suppliers to the United States were Canada ($481K), Israel ($295K) and Italy ($124K), together comprising 85% of total imports. These countries were followed by France, Tunisia and Morocco, which together accounted for a further 13%.
In terms of the main suppliers, France, with a CAGR of +32.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
