China Dairy Produce Import Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the dairy produce price stood at $3,324 per ton (CIF, China), falling by -2.8% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2022 an increase of 9.5% month-to-month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $3,521 per ton. From August 2022 to September 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was the United States ($4,540 per ton), while the price for Poland ($812 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uruguay (+5.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Dairy Produce Import Prices by Type
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplied products. In September 2022, the product with the highest price was butter and dairy spreads ($7,013 per ton), while the price for skim milk ($783 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by yoghurt and fermented milk (+4.4%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Dairy Produce Imports
In September 2022, imports of dairy produce into China declined to 158K tons, with a decrease of -2.7% against August 2022 figures. Over the period under review, imports saw a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 with an increase of 6.9% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 421K tons in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to September 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, dairy produce imports declined to $524M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. Overall, imports saw a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in July 2022 with an increase of 11% month-to-month. Imports peaked at 1.4M tons in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to September 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
China Dairy Produce Imports by Type
Powdered milk (55K tons), whole fresh milk (51K tons) and cream fresh (21K tons) were the main products of dairy produce imports to China, with a combined 81% share of total imports. Cheese, skim milk, butter and dairy spreads, ghee, evaporated and condensed milk and yoghurt and fermented milk lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the biggest increases were in evaporated and condensed milk (with a CAGR of +5.5%), while purchases for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, powdered milk ($259M) constituted the largest type of dairy produce supplied to China, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by cream fresh ($81M), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by cheese, with an 11% share.
China Dairy Produce Imports by Country
In September 2022, New Zealand (68K tons) constituted the largest supplier of dairy produce to China, with a 43% share of total imports. Moreover, dairy produce imports from New Zealand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (20K tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Australia (19K tons), with a 12% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume from New Zealand totaled -17.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Germany (-9.8% per month) and Australia (-4.2% per month).
In value terms, New Zealand ($272M) constituted the largest supplier of dairy produce to China, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Australia ($61M), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 6.3% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from New Zealand stood at -16.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Australia (-2.0% per month) and France (+3.7% per month).
