China Diamond Import Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the diamond price stood at $7,499 per ton (CIF, China), reducing by -32% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, saw significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in August 2022 an increase of 234% month-to-month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $11,024 per ton, and then plummeted in the following month.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2022, the country with the highest price was Myanmar ($8,816 per ton), while the price for Madagascar ($358 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+12.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Diamond Imports
Diamond imports into China stood at 13K tons in September 2022, rising by 9.6% against the previous month's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2022 when imports increased by 29% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at 17K tons in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to September 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, diamond imports dropped sharply to $97M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. Overall, imports recorded a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2022 when imports increased by 171% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 130K tons in August 2022, and then plummeted in the following month.
China Diamond Imports by Country
Madagascar (2.5K tons), South Africa (2.2K tons) and Myanmar (1.9K tons) were the main suppliers of diamond imports to China, together comprising 51% of total imports.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Myanmar (with a CAGR of +59.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Myanmar ($16M), South Africa ($9.5M) and Brazil ($957K) appeared to be the largest diamond suppliers to China, with a combined 28% share of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, Myanmar, with a CAGR of +66.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
