U.S. Diamond Import Price per Ton in July 2022
In July 2022, the diamond price per ton stood at $154.2 (CIF, US), surging by 9.9% against the previous month. In general, the import price posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in February 2022 when the average import price increased by 331% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $195.5 per ton in April 2022; however, from May 2022 to July 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2022, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($5.4M per ton), while the price for Peru ($3.4 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+1,963.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Diamond Imports
After two months of growth, supplies from abroad of diamonds and other precious stones (unworked) decreased by -20.5% to 271K tons in July 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a sharp shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 with an increase of 64% m-o-m.
In value terms, diamond imports contracted to $42M (IndexBox estimates) in July 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2022 with an increase of 138% month-to-month. As a result, imports attained the peak of $48M, and then dropped in the following month.
U.S. Diamond Imports by Country
In July 2022, Brazil (161K tons) constituted the largest diamond supplier to the United States, with a 59% share of total imports. Moreover, diamond imports from Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (57K tons), threefold. Madagascar (19K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.9% share.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Brazil amounted to -23.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: India (+21.4% per month) and Madagascar (-25.1% per month).
In value terms, the largest diamond suppliers to the United States were Brazil ($948K), India ($619K) and Tanzania ($141K), together accounting for 4.1% of total imports.
Tanzania, with a CAGR of +26.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
