Dissolving Grade Wood Pulp Prices in the United States

U.S. Dissolving Grade Wood Pulp Export Price per Ton in August 2022

In August 2022, the dissolving grade wood pulp price per ton amounted to $1.3K (FOB, US), increasing by 4.6% against the previous month. Over the last seven-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 an increase of 5% against the previous month. The export price peaked in August 2022.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In August 2022, the country with the highest price was Japan ($1.8K per ton), while the average price for exports to Indonesia ($1.1K per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Dissolving Grade Wood Pulp Exports

In August 2022, after four months of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of dissolving grade wood pulp, when their volume decreased by -9% to 73K tons. The total export volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.4% from January 2022 to August 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 when exports increased by 21% month-to-month.

In value terms, dissolving grade wood pulp exports dropped slightly to $96M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. In general, total exports indicated a moderate increase from January 2022 to August 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +3.0% over the last seven-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2022 figures, exports increased by +53.8% against March 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 when exports increased by 27% against the previous month.

U.S. Dissolving Grade Wood Pulp Exports by Country

Indonesia (19K tons), China (18K tons) and Japan (10K tons) were the main destinations of dissolving grade wood pulp exports from the United States, with a combined 65% share of total exports. Thailand, Germany, India, Switzerland and Singapore lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +27.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($24M), Indonesia ($21M) and Japan ($19M) were the largest markets for dissolving grade wood pulp exported from the United States worldwide, together accounting for 66% of total exports. These countries were followed by Thailand, Germany, India, Switzerland and Singapore, which together accounted for a further 25%.

Thailand, with a CAGR of +25.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
