China Dry Onion Export Price in August 2022
In August 2022, the dry onion price stood at $683 per ton (FOB, China), remaining stable against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2022 an increase of 30% against the previous month. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $887 per ton. From May 2022 to August 2022, the the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In August 2022, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($984 per ton), while the average price for exports to Thailand ($365 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From February 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+1.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Dry Onion Exports
In August 2022, after three months of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of dry onions, when their volume decreased by -5.9% to 74K tons. Overall, exports, however, saw a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2022 when exports increased by 86% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at 78K tons in July 2022, and then dropped in the following month.
In value terms, dry onion exports dropped to $50M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2022 when exports increased by 85% against the previous month. The exports peaked at 54K tons in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to August 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
China Dry Onion Exports by Country
Vietnam (27K tons), Japan (21K tons) and South Korea (8.5K tons) were the main destinations of dry onion exports from China, with a combined 76% share of total exports.
From February 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by South Korea (with a CAGR of +92.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Vietnam ($26M) remains the key foreign market for dry onion exports from China, comprising 52% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($12M), with a 25% share of total exports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 7.7% share.
From February 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value to Vietnam totaled +22.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Japan (+2.0% per month) and South Korea (+93.0% per month).
