U.S. Dry Onion Import Price per Ton in August 2022
In August 2022, the dry onion price per ton stood at $991.7 (CIF, US), rising by 11% against the previous month. Over the period from January 2022 to August 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2022 when the average import price increased by 23% m-o-m. The import price peaked in August 2022.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Mexico ($1.5K per ton), while the price for Peru ($416.0 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+5.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Dry Onion Imports
In August 2022, approximately 37K tons of dry onions were imported into the United States; dropping by -2.6% compared with the previous month. Over the period under review, imports recorded a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when imports increased by 67% m-o-m. As a result, imports attained the peak of 78K tons. From April 2022 to August 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, dry onion imports expanded markedly to $37M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a noticeable descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 19% against the previous month.
U.S. Dry Onion Imports by Country
Mexico (14K tons), Peru (13K tons) and Canada (9K tons) were the main suppliers of dry onion imports to the United States, together comprising 95% of total imports.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the biggest increases were in Canada (with a CAGR of +4.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, Mexico ($20M), Canada ($10M) and Peru ($5.3M) constituted the largest dry onion suppliers to the United States, together comprising 96% of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, Canada, with a CAGR of +9.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
