China Electronic Chip Import Price in August 2022
In August 2022, the electronic chip price stood at $740 per thousand units (CIF, China), declining by -3.5% against the previous month. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 an increase of 8% against the previous month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $0.8 per unit. From April 2022 to August 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Korea ($1.5 per unit), while the price for Germany ($120 per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+4.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Electronic Chip Import Prices by Type
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplied products. In August 2022, the product with the highest price was multichip integrated circuits: memories ($2.4 per unit), while the price for electronic integrated circuits; n.e.c. in heading no. 8542 ($303 per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by electronic integrated circuits; amplifiers (+4.2%), while the prices for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.
China Electronic Chip Imports
In August 2022, supplies from abroad of electronic chips decreased by -0.3% to 45B units, falling for the second month in a row after two months of growth. In general, imports saw a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when imports increased by 19% month-to-month. Imports peaked at 51B units in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to August 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, electronic chip imports shrank modestly to $33.2B (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a pronounced downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 28% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at 39B units in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to August 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
China Electronic Chip Imports by Type
In August 2022, electronic integrated circuits; n.e.c. in heading no. 8542 (26B units) constituted the largest type of electronic chip supplied to China, accounting for a 58% share of total imports. Moreover, electronic integrated circuits; n.e.c. in heading no. 8542 exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, electronic integrated circuits; processors and controllers, whether or not combined with memories, converters, logic circuits, amplifiers, clock and timing circuits, or other circuits (13B units), twofold. Multichip integrated circuits: memories (3.4B units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.5% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of electronic integrated circuits; n.e.c. in heading no. 8542 stood at -2.0%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: electronic integrated circuits; processors and controllers, whether or not combined with memories, converters, logic circuits, amplifiers, clock and timing circuits, or other circuits (-0.9% per month) and multichip integrated circuits: memories (-0.9% per month).
In value terms, electronic integrated circuits; processors and controllers, whether or not combined with memories, converters, logic circuits, amplifiers, clock and timing circuits, or other circuits ($16.1B) constituted the largest type of electronic chip supplied to China, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by multichip integrated circuits: memories ($7.9B), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by electronic integrated circuits; n.e.c. in heading no. 8542, with a 24% share.
China Electronic Chip Imports by Country
In August 2022, Taiwan (Chinese) (15B units) constituted the largest electronic chip supplier to China, with a 33% share of total imports. Moreover, electronic chip imports from Taiwan (Chinese) exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Korea (4.6B units), threefold. Japan (3.7B units) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.2% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Taiwan (Chinese) totaled -1.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: South Korea (-0.5% per month) and Japan (-1.4% per month).
In value terms, Taiwan (Chinese) ($13B), South Korea ($6.9B) and Malaysia ($2.3B) were the largest electronic chip suppliers to China, with a combined 67% share of total imports. Japan, the United States, Thailand, Singapore and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 12%.
Germany, with a CAGR of +4.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
