China Ferro-Chromium Import Price in August 2022
In August 2022, the ferro-chromium price stood at $1,333 per ton (CIF, China), dropping by -6.3% against the previous month. Overall, the import price showed a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2022 when the average import price increased by 8.6% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $1,541 per ton in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to August 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2022, the highest price was recorded for prices from Kazakhstan ($1,594 per ton) and India ($1,435 per ton), while the price for South Africa ($1,222 per ton) and Zimbabwe ($1,340 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (0.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
China Ferro-Chromium Import Prices by Type
Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was ferro-alloys; ferro-chromium, containing by weight 4% or less of carbon ($5,287 per ton), while the price for ferro-alloys; ferro-chromium, containing by weight more than 4% of carbon amounted to $1,333 per ton.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by ferro-alloys; ferro-chromium, containing by weight more than 4% of carbon (-2.0%).
China Ferro-Chromium Imports
Ferro-chromium imports into China plummeted to 235K tons in August 2022, reducing by -24.6% on July 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a tangible expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in July 2022 when imports increased by 140% m-o-m. As a result, imports reached the peak of 312K tons, and then fell notably in the following month.
In value terms, ferro-chromium imports dropped rapidly to $313M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a modest increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2022 when imports increased by 133% m-o-m. As a result, imports attained the peak of $443M, and then dropped significantly in the following month.
China Ferro-Chromium Imports by Type
In August 2022, ferro-alloys; ferro-chromium, containing by weight more than 4% of carbon (235K tons) was the main type of ferro-chromium supplied to China, accounting for a 99.9% share of total imports. It was followed by ferro-alloys; ferro-chromium, containing by weight 4% or less of carbon (1 tons), with less than 0.1% share of total imports.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of ferro-alloys; ferro-chromium, containing by weight more than 4% of carbon totaled +3.4%.
In value terms, ferro-alloys; ferro-chromium, containing by weight more than 4% of carbon ($313M) constituted the largest type of ferro-chromium supplied to China, comprising 99.9% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by ferro-alloys; ferro-chromium, containing by weight 4% or less of carbon ($5.3K), with less than 0.1% share of total imports.
China Ferro-Chromium Imports by Country
In August 2022, South Africa (141K tons) constituted the largest supplier of ferro-chromium to China, accounting for a 60% share of total imports. Moreover, ferro-chromium imports from South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Kazakhstan (41K tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by India (37K tons), with a 16% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from South Africa amounted to +12.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (+13.0% per month) and India (+1.4% per month).
In value terms, South Africa ($172M) constituted the largest supplier of ferro-chromium to China, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($65M), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 17% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from South Africa totaled +10.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (+10.7% per month) and India (-0.3% per month).

Throughout January-September 2021, global ferroalloy trade totalled $11.8B, increasing by +36% compared to the same period last year.
