U.S. Ferro-Silicon Import Price per Ton in August 2022
In August 2022, the ferro-silicon price per ton amounted to $3.8K (CIF, US), with an increase of 22% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2022 when the average import price increased by 39% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $4.2K per ton in March 2022; however, from April 2022 to August 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2022, the country with the highest price was Iceland ($4.6K per ton), while the price for China ($2.4K per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+7.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Ferro-Silicon Import Prices by Type
As there is only one major imported type of ferro-silicon, the average price level is determined by prices for ferro-alloys; ferro-silicon, containing by weight 55% or less of silicon.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for ferro-alloys; ferro-silicon, containing by weight 55% or less of silicon amounted to +2.7% per month.
U.S. Ferro-Silicon Imports
Ferro-silicon imports into the United States skyrocketed to 46K tons in August 2022, picking up by 128% against July 2022. Over the period under review, imports posted resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 195% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in August 2022.
In value terms, ferro-silicon imports surged to $174M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2022 with an increase of 284% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in August 2022.

In August 2022, ferro-alloys; ferro-silicon, containing by weight 55% or less of silicon (5.8K tons) was the main type of ferro-silicon supplied to the United States, accounting for a approximately 100% share of total imports.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of ferro-alloys; ferro-silicon, containing by weight 55% or less of silicon totaled +14.9%.
In value terms, ferro-alloys; ferro-silicon, containing by weight 55% or less of silicon ($16M) constituted the largest type of ferro-silicon supplied to the United States.
U.S. Ferro-Silicon Imports by Country
In August 2022, Russia (23K tons) constituted the largest supplier of ferro-silicon to the United States, accounting for a 51% share of total imports. Moreover, ferro-silicon imports from Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Malaysia (7K tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by China (4.4K tons), with a 9.5% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Russia totaled +8.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+14.2% per month) and China (+175.8% per month).
In value terms, Russia ($103M) constituted the largest supplier of ferro-silicon to the United States, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($25M), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Canada, with a 6.6% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from Russia totaled +5.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+22.8% per month) and Canada (+6.4% per month).
