Footwear Prices in China

China Footwear Export Price in September 2022

In September 2022, the footwear price amounted to $13.6 per pair (FOB, China), surging by 1.8% against the previous month. Over the last eight-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.2%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in February 2022 an increase of 7.7% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum in September 2022.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In September 2022, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($17.8 per pair), while the average price for exports to South Africa ($11.0 per pair) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+4.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

China Footwear Export Prices by Type

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major types of exported product. In September 2022, the product with the highest price was leather footwear ($21.8 per pair), while the average price for exports of waterproof footwear ($7.6 per pair) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: waterproof footwear (+1.4%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

China Footwear Exports

In September 2022, overseas shipments of footwear decreased by -16.1% to 322M pairs, falling for the second month in a row after four months of growth. Overall, exports continue to indicate a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 with an increase of 35% m-o-m. The exports peaked at 445M pairs in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to September 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, footwear exports dropped to $4.4B (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in May 2022 with an increase of 35% month-to-month. The exports peaked at 5.6B pairs in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to September 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

China Footwear Exports by Type

Footwear of rubber or plastics, not waterproof, not sports, without a metal toe-cap (177M pairs), footwear with uppers of textile materials (94M pairs) and leather footwear (41M pairs) were the main products of footwear exports from China, together accounting for 97% of total exports.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the major product types, was attained by leather footwear (with a CAGR of -2.1%), while the other products experienced a decline.

In value terms, the most traded types of footwear in China were footwear of rubber or plastics, not waterproof, not sports, without a metal toe-cap ($2.2B), footwear with uppers of textile materials ($1.2B) and leather footwear ($902M), with a combined 98% share of total exports.

Among the main product categories, leather footwear, with a CAGR of -0.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced a decline.

China Footwear Exports by Country

The United States (46M pairs) was the main destination for footwear exports from China, with a 14% share of total exports. Moreover, footwear exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Japan (17M pairs), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Philippines (16M pairs), with a 5.1% share.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume to the United States amounted to -7.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Japan (+0.2% per month) and the Philippines (+3.4% per month).

In value terms, the United States ($765M) remains the key foreign market for footwear exports from China, comprising 17% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($220M), with a 5% share of total exports. It was followed by the Philippines, with a 4.9% share.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value to the United States amounted to -6.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Japan (+0.3% per month) and the Philippines (+4.6% per month).
