Frozen Fish And Seafood Prices in the United States

U.S. Frozen Fish And Seafood Import Price per Ton in July 2022

In July 2022, the frozen fish and seafood price per ton stood at $9.3K (CIF, US), shrinking by -6.9% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 when the average import price increased by 19% against the previous month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $12.3K per ton. From June 2022 to July 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2022, the country with the highest price was Canada ($21.0K per ton), while the price for Russia ($2.4K per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Norway (+5.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Frozen Fish And Seafood Import Prices by Type

Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was frozen crustaceans ($10.6K per ton), while the price for frozen whole fish ($4.8K per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by frozen fish meat (+3.6%), while the prices for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.

U.S. Frozen Fish And Seafood Imports

In August 2022, imports of frozen fish and seafood into the United States dropped slightly to 137K tons, therefore, remained relatively stable against July 2022 figures. Overall, imports showed a mild descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2022 with an increase of 22% against the previous month. As a result, imports attained the peak of 162K tons. From June 2022 to August 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, frozen fish and seafood imports fell to $1.2B (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a noticeable decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2022 when imports increased by 45% against the previous month. As a result, imports reached the peak of $2B. From June 2022 to August 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

U.S. Frozen Fish And Seafood Imports by Type

Frozen crustaceans (61K tons), frozen fish fillet (52K tons) and frozen whole fish (14K tons) were the main products of frozen fish and seafood imports to the United States, together accounting for 92% of total imports.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the major product types, was attained by frozen fish fillet (with a CAGR of -0.1%), while imports for the other products experienced a decline.

In value terms, frozen crustaceans ($647M), frozen fish fillet ($441M) and molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) ($73M) constituted the most imported types of frozen fish and seafood in the United States, together accounting for 94% of total imports.

U.S. Frozen Fish And Seafood Imports by Country

China (24K tons), India (20K tons) and Ecuador (19K tons) were the main suppliers of frozen fish and seafood imports to the United States, together accounting for 46% of total imports. Vietnam, Canada, Indonesia, Chile, Argentina, Mexico, Norway, Taiwan (Chinese) and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 41%.

From January 2022 to July 2022, the biggest increases were in Canada (with a CAGR of +22.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest frozen fish and seafood suppliers to the United States were Canada ($222M), India ($173M) and Ecuador ($144M), together accounting for 42% of total imports.

Canada, with a CAGR of +23.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
