U.S. Frozen Potato Export Price per Ton in August 2022
In August 2022, the frozen potato price per ton amounted to $1.4K (FOB, US), picking up by 7.7% against the previous month. Over the period from January 2022 to August 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.9%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In August 2022, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($1.9K per ton), while the average price for exports to Japan ($1.2K per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Frozen Potato Export Prices by Type
Average prices varied noticeably for the major types of exported product. In August 2022, the product with the highest price was frozen boiled potatoes ($1.4K per ton), while the average price for exports of frozen potatoes prepared or preserved amounted to $1.4K per ton.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: preserved frozen potato (+2.1%).
U.S. Frozen Potato Exports
In August 2022, shipments abroad of frozen potatoes decreased by -14.7% to 84K tons for the first time since May 2022, thus ending a two-month rising trend. The total export volume increased at an average monthly rate of +3.5% over the period from January 2022 to August 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2022 with an increase of 30% against the previous month.
In value terms, frozen potato exports contracted to $116M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. The total export value increased at an average monthly rate of +5.5% from January 2022 to August 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in February 2022 when exports increased by 29% m-o-m.
U.S. Frozen Potato Exports by Type
Frozen potatoes prepared or preserved (82K tons) was the largest type of frozen potato exported from the United States, accounting for a 97% share of total exports. It was followed by frozen boiled potatoes (2.5K tons), with a 2.9% share of total exports.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of export of frozen potatoes prepared or preserved stood at +3.7%.
In value terms, frozen potatoes prepared or preserved ($113M) remains the largest type of frozen potato exported from the United States, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by frozen boiled potatoes ($3.5M), with a 3% share of total exports.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the export volume of frozen potatoes prepared or preserved totaled +5.8%.
U.S. Frozen Potato Exports by Country
Japan (25K tons), Mexico (15K tons) and South Korea (8.1K tons) were the main destinations of frozen potato exports from the United States, together accounting for 57% of total exports. The Philippines, Malaysia, Canada, Taiwan (Chinese), Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Guatemala and Hong Kong SAR lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Singapore (with a CAGR of +16.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Japan ($29M), Mexico ($21M) and South Korea ($12M) were the largest markets for frozen potato exported from the United States worldwide, together accounting for 53% of total exports. These countries were followed by the Philippines, Malaysia, Canada, Singapore, Taiwan (Chinese), Guatemala, Saudi Arabia and Hong Kong SAR, which together accounted for a further 37%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Singapore, with a CAGR of +21.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
