China Frozen, Dried And Smoked Fish Import Price in September 2022

In September 2022, the frozen, dried and smoked fish price amounted to $4,389 per ton (CIF, China), with an increase of 6.5% against the previous month. Over the period from January 2022 to September 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2022 when the average import price increased by 21% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum in September 2022.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2022, the country with the highest price was Canada ($9,287 per ton), while the price for Russia ($2,599 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (+10.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

China Frozen, Dried And Smoked Fish Import Prices by Type

Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was frozen crustaceans ($7,141 per ton), while the price for frozen whole fish ($2,798 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by frozen fish meat (+3.4%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

China Frozen, Dried And Smoked Fish Imports

In September 2022, supplies from abroad of frozen, dried and smoked fish decreased by -13.1% to 271K tons, falling for the second consecutive month after five months of growth. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when imports increased by 29% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at 315K tons in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to September 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, frozen, dried and smoked fish imports reduced to $1.2B (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a notable increase from January 2022 to September 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +2.4% over the last eight months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2022 figures, imports decreased by -7.4% against August 2022 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in July 2022 with an increase of 34% m-o-m. Imports peaked at 1.3M tons in August 2022, and then dropped in the following month.

China Frozen, Dried And Smoked Fish Imports by Type

Frozen whole fish (146K tons), frozen crustaceans (96K tons) and frozen fish fillet (13K tons) were the main products of frozen, dried and smoked fish imports to China, with a combined 94% share of total imports. Dried or smoked fish and frozen fish meat lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 6.1%.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the major product types, was attained by dried or smoked fish (with a CAGR of +14.6%), while imports for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, frozen crustaceans ($689M), frozen whole fish ($407M) and frozen fish fillet ($42M) appeared to be the most imported types of frozen, dried and smoked fish in China, together comprising 96% of total imports. These products were followed by dried or smoked fish and frozen fish meat, which together accounted for a further 4.4%.

China Frozen, Dried And Smoked Fish Imports by Country

Russia (71K tons), Ecuador (55K tons) and Vietnam (32K tons) were the main suppliers of frozen, dried and smoked fish imports to China, with a combined 58% share of total imports. These countries were followed by India, the United States, Norway, Indonesia, Greenland, Canada, Malaysia and Thailand, which together accounted for a further 29%.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the biggest increases were in Thailand (with a CAGR of +6.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest frozen, dried and smoked fish suppliers to China were Ecuador ($344M), Russia ($186M) and India ($148M), with a combined 57% share of total imports. Vietnam, Norway, the United States, Canada, Thailand, Greenland, Indonesia and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.

Norway, with a CAGR of +7.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
