China Frozen Whole Fish Import Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the frozen whole fish price amounted to $2,798 per ton (CIF, China), increasing by 9.4% against the previous month. Over the period from January 2022 to September 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2022 when the average import price increased by 14% against the previous month. The import price peaked in September 2022.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2022, the country with the highest price was Greenland ($4,970 per ton), while the price for Japan ($1,308 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iceland (+8.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Frozen Whole Fish Imports
In September 2022, overseas purchases of frozen whole fish decreased by -19.7% to 146K tons, falling for the third month in a row after four months of growth. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 when imports increased by 32% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 185K tons in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to September 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, frozen whole fish imports dropped to $407M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 with an increase of 31% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at 467K tons in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to September 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
China Frozen Whole Fish Imports by Country
In September 2022, Russia (70K tons) constituted the largest supplier of frozen whole fish to China, accounting for a 48% share of total imports. Moreover, frozen whole fish imports from Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (13K tons), fivefold. Norway (13K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.1% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Russia was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: the United States (-2.6% per month) and Norway (+1.2% per month).
In value terms, Russia ($160M) constituted the largest supplier of frozen whole fish to China, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Norway ($55M), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 12% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from Russia totaled +2.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Norway (+6.5% per month) and the United States (+1.4% per month).
