China Fruit and Berry Import Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the fruit and berry price stood at $1,421 per ton (CIF, China), with a decrease of -19.8% against the previous month. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2022 an increase of 41% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $2,644 per ton in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to September 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Peru ($5,247 per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($516 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Myanmar (+6.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Fruit and Berry Import Prices by Type
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplied products. In September 2022, the product with the highest price was grapes ($10.4 per kg), while the price for dates ($548 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by melon (+32.7%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Fruit and Berry Imports
In September 2022, overseas purchases of fruits and berries decreased by -18.6% to 277K tons, falling for the fourth month in a row after three months of growth. Over the period under review, imports saw a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when imports increased by 16% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at 719K tons in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to September 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, fruit and berry imports fell notably to $393M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. Overall, imports recorded a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in May 2022 with an increase of 60% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at 1.7M tons in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to September 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
China Fruit and Berry Imports by Type
In September 2022, bananas (122K tons) constituted the largest type of fruit and berry supplied to China, with a 44% share of total imports. Moreover, bananas exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, oranges (59K tons), twofold. Tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas (22K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of bananas totaled -3.2%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: oranges (+55.3% per month) and tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas (+332.5% per month).
In value terms, the most traded types of fruits and berries in China were bananas ($74M), oranges ($64M) and raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries ($56M), with a combined 49% share of total imports. These products were followed by kiwi fruit, tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas, apples, cherries and sour cherries, mangoes, mangosteens and guavas, pineapples, avocados, grapefruits, lemons and limes, plums and sloes, figs, grapes, pears and quinces, dates, papayas, peaches and nectarines and melons, which together accounted for a further 51%.
China Fruit and Berry Imports by Country
The Philippines (82K tons), South Africa (68K tons) and Cambodia (26K tons) were the main suppliers of fruit and berry imports to China, with a combined 64% share of total imports.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the biggest increases were in South Africa (with a CAGR of +87.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($73M), New Zealand ($71M) and Peru ($68M) were the largest fruit and berry suppliers to China, with a combined 54% share of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, South Africa, with a CAGR of +73.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
