China Fruit Import Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the fruit price stood at $1,330 per ton (CIF, China), shrinking by -20.9% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 an increase of 44% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $2,639 per ton in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to September 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($3,312 per ton), while the price for Cambodia ($584 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Myanmar (+6.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Fruit Import Prices by Type
Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was grapes ($10.4 per kg), while the price for dates ($548 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by melon (+32.7%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Fruit Imports
After three months of decline, purchases abroad of fruits increased by 4.4% to 351K tons in September 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 37% against the previous month. Imports peaked at 719K tons in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to September 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, fruit imports contracted remarkably to $467M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2022 when imports increased by 65% m-o-m. As a result, imports reached the peak of $1.7B. From June 2022 to September 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
China Fruit Imports by Type
Bananas and plantains (122K tons), non-citrus fruits not elsewhere classified (83K tons) and oranges (59K tons) were the main products of fruit imports to China, with a combined 75% share of total imports. Tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas, pineapples, apples, kiwi fruit, lemons and limes, mangoes, mangosteens and guavas, grapefruits, avocados, plums and sloes, dates, figs, pears and quinces, papayas, grapes, peaches and nectarines and melons lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the major product types, was attained by mandarin and clementine (with a CAGR of +332.5%), while imports for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, non-citrus fruits not elsewhere classified ($152M) constituted the largest type of fruit supplied to China, comprising 33% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by bananas and plantains ($74M), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by oranges, with a 14% share.
China Fruit Imports by Country
The Philippines (82K tons), South Africa (71K tons) and Vietnam (52K tons) were the main suppliers of fruit imports to China, with a combined 58% share of total imports.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the biggest increases were in South Africa (with a CAGR of +88.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Thailand ($116M), South Africa ($76M) and New Zealand ($71M) constituted the largest fruit suppliers to China, together accounting for 56% of total imports.
New Zealand, with a CAGR of +88.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
