U.S. Garlic Import Price per Ton in August 2022
In August 2022, the garlic price per ton amounted to $2.0K (CIF, US), with an increase of 12% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable setback. The import price peaked at $2.4K per ton in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to August 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2022, the country with the highest price was Spain ($2.9K per ton), while the price for China ($1.5K per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (-0.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
U.S. Garlic Imports
In August 2022, approximately 7.3K tons of garlic were imported into the United States; which is down by -21.6% on July 2022 figures. In general, imports recorded a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2022 with an increase of 29% month-to-month. As a result, imports attained the peak of 14K tons. From May 2022 to August 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, garlic imports shrank to $15M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in June 2022 when imports increased by 10% m-o-m.
U.S. Garlic Imports by Country
China (3.2K tons), Spain (2.3K tons) and Mexico (1.5K tons) were the main suppliers of garlic imports to the United States, together comprising 96% of total imports.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Mexico (with a CAGR of +20.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest garlic suppliers to the United States were Spain ($6.7M), China ($4.8M) and Mexico ($2.6M), with a combined 95% share of total imports. Vietnam and Argentina lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 2.6%.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +16.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
