Ghee Prices in China

China Ghee Import Price in September 2022

In September 2022, the ghee price amounted to $6,646 per ton (CIF, China), approximately equating the previous month. Over the period from January 2022 to September 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.5%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in May 2022 when the average import price increased by 6% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $6,882 per ton in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to September 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2022, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($10.5 per kg), while the price for New Zealand ($6,471 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+5.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

China Ghee Imports

In September 2022, supplies from abroad of ghee decreased by -30.2% to 3.1K tons, falling for the second month in a row after three months of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2022 when imports increased by 63% month-to-month. As a result, imports reached the peak of 5.8K tons. From August 2022 to September 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, ghee imports reduced dramatically to $21M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a notable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in July 2022 with an increase of 68% against the previous month. As a result, imports attained the peak of $40M. From August 2022 to September 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

China Ghee Imports by Country

In September 2022, New Zealand (2.9K tons) was the main ghee supplier to China, with a 94% share of total imports. It was followed by Belgium (67 tons), with a 2.2% share of total imports.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from New Zealand was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Belgium (+15.9% per month) and Germany (-0.0% per month).

In value terms, New Zealand ($19M) constituted the largest supplier of ghee to China, comprising 92% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($708K), with a 3.4% share of total imports.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from New Zealand totaled +2.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Belgium (+22.1% per month) and Germany (+2.8% per month).
