U.S. Glass Bottle and Container Import Price in December 2020
In December 2020, the glass bottle and container price amounted to $823 per thousand units (CIF, US), approximately reflecting the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in July 2020 when the average import price increased by less than 0.1% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $823 per thousand units in March 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to December 2020.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2020, the highest price was recorded for prices from Mexico ($823 per thousand units) and Poland ($823 per thousand units), while the price for South Korea ($823 per thousand units) and China ($823 per thousand units) were amongst the lowest.
From June 2020 to December 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (0.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Glass Bottle and Container Imports
For the fourth consecutive month, the United States recorded growth in purchases abroad of glass bottles and containers, which increased by 3% to 177M units in December 2020. The total import volume increased at an average monthly rate of +2.2% from June 2020 to December 2020; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in February 2020 when imports increased by 5.5% month-to-month. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at 177M units in July 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to December 2020.
In value terms, glass bottle and container imports rose slightly to $146M (IndexBox estimates) in December 2020. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +2.2% over the period from June 2020 to December 2020; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain months. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in February 2020 with an increase of 5.5% month-to-month. Imports peaked at 146M units in July 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to December 2020.

Mexico (49M units), China (30M units) and Taiwan (Chinese) (18M units) were the main suppliers of glass bottle and container imports to the United States, together comprising 55% of total imports. Canada, France, Germany, Italy, India, Poland, Chile, the United Arab Emirates and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.
From June 2020 to December 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +10.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
