China Gold Import Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the gold price amounted to $54.9K per kg (CIF, China), shrinking by -3.5% against the previous month. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 an increase of 1.9% against the previous month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $60,755 per kg; afterwards, it flattened through to September 2022.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2022, the highest price was recorded for prices from Singapore ($58.4K per kg) and Hong Kong SAR ($56.0K per kg), while the price for South Africa ($54.0K per kg) and Japan ($54.6K per kg) were amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+0.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
China Gold Imports
After three months of growth, purchases abroad of gold decreased by -16.3% to 152 tons in September 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a moderate expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in June 2022 with an increase of 292% against the previous month. Imports peaked at 182 tons in August 2022, and then fell markedly in the following month.
In value terms, gold imports declined sharply to $8.4B (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. In general, imports, however, saw noticeable growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in June 2022 with an increase of 291% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 10M tons in August 2022, and then shrank significantly in the following month.
China Gold Imports by Country
Switzerland (57 tons), Canada (34 tons) and South Africa (27 tons) were the main suppliers of gold imports to China, with a combined 77% share of total imports.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the biggest increases were in Canada (with a CAGR of +35.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest gold suppliers to China were Switzerland ($3.1B), Canada ($1.8B) and South Africa ($1.5B), with a combined 77% share of total imports.
Canada, with a CAGR of +34.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
