U.S. Graphic Papers Import Price per Ton in August 2022
In August 2022, the graphic papers price per ton amounted to $1.1K (CIF, US), picking up by 5.1% against the previous month. Over the period from January 2022 to August 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.9%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in June 2022 when the average import price increased by 5.2% against the previous month. The import price peaked in August 2022.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2022, the country with the highest price was Italy ($1.9K per ton), while the price for Canada ($897.0 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+6.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Graphic Papers Import Prices by Type
Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was printing and writing paper ($1.2K per ton), while the price for newsprint stood at $683.5 per ton.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by printing and writing paper (+2.6%).
U.S. Graphic Papers Imports
Graphic papers imports into the United States amounted to 469K tons in August 2022, increasing by 6.6% on the previous month's figure. The total import volume increased at an average monthly rate of +3.4% from January 2022 to August 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain months. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when imports increased by 13% month-to-month. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in August 2022.
In value terms, graphic papers imports rose notably to $514M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from January 2022 to August 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +6.5% over the last seven months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2022 figures, imports increased by +58.5% against February 2022 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 14% m-o-m. Imports peaked in August 2022.
U.S. Graphic Papers Imports by Type
In August 2022, printing and writing paper (388K tons) constituted the largest type of graphic papers supplied to the United States, accounting for a 83% share of total imports. Moreover, printing and writing paper exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, newsprint (82K tons), fivefold.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of printing and writing paper amounted to +4.6%.
In value terms, printing and writing paper ($458M) constituted the largest type of graphic papers supplied to the United States, comprising 89% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by newsprint ($56M), with an 11% share of total imports.
U.S. Graphic Papers Imports by Country
In August 2022, Canada (249K tons) constituted the largest supplier of graphic papers to the United States, with a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, graphic papers imports from Canada exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Finland (57K tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by South Korea (28K tons), with a 6% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Canada was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Finland (+11.2% per month) and South Korea (+1.6% per month).
In value terms, Canada ($223M) constituted the largest supplier of graphic papers to the United States, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Finland ($64M), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with an 8.5% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from Canada stood at +3.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Finland (+14.2% per month) and Germany (+8.3% per month).
