U.S. Green Coffee Import Price per Ton in August 2022
In August 2022, the green coffee price per ton stood at $5.2K (CIF, US), picking up by 2.2% against the previous month. Over the last seven months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +3.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2022 an increase of 12% month-to-month. The import price peaked in August 2022.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2022, the country with the highest price was Ethiopia ($7.1K per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($2.2K per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+10.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Green Coffee Imports
In August 2022, after two months of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of coffee (green), when their volume decreased by -17.2% to 117K tons. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 23% against the previous month.
In value terms, green coffee imports dropped markedly to $611M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +2.4% from January 2022 to August 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when imports increased by 30% month-to-month.
U.S. Green Coffee Imports by Country
Brazil (34K tons), Colombia (19K tons) and Vietnam (12K tons) were the main suppliers of green coffee imports to the United States, with a combined 56% share of total imports. Guatemala, Nicaragua, Mexico, Honduras, Ethiopia, Peru, Indonesia, Costa Rica, Uganda and El Salvador lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 41%.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by El Salvador (with a CAGR of +31.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest green coffee suppliers to the United States were Brazil ($156M), Colombia ($125M) and Guatemala ($52M), with a combined 54% share of total imports. Mexico, Nicaragua, Ethiopia, Honduras, Vietnam, Indonesia, Costa Rica, Peru, El Salvador and Uganda lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.
El Salvador, with a CAGR of +36.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
