U.S. Hand Tools Import Price per Ton in August 2022
In August 2022, the hand tools price per ton amounted to $2.8K (CIF, US), with a decrease of -12.6% against the previous month. Over the last seven months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.9%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 an increase of 15% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $3.2K per ton in July 2022, and then contracted in the following month.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2022, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($4.1K per ton), while the price for China ($2.1K per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+10.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Hand Tools Import Prices by Type
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplied products. In August 2022, the product with the highest price was drilling or threading hand tools, household hand tools, screwdrivers, hammers and similar hand tools ($5.2K per ton), while the price for sets of two or more tools ($361.4 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by hand-operated spanners and wrenches (+3.4%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Hand Tools Imports
After two months of decline, purchases abroad of hand tools increased by 28% to 154K tons in August 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.
In value terms, hand tools imports rose notably to $430M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.4% over the period from January 2022 to August 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 with an increase of 13% m-o-m. As a result, imports attained the peak of $431M. From April 2022 to August 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
U.S. Hand Tools Imports by Type
Hand-operated spanners and wrenches (54K tons), sets of two or more tools (28K tons) and drilling or threading hand tools, household hand tools, screwdrivers, hammers and similar hand tools (28K tons) were the main products of hand tools imports to the United States, with a combined 72% share of total imports. These products were followed by hand saws, files, pliers, pincers, tweezers, metal cutting shears and similar hand tools and agriculture or forestry hand tools, which together accounted for a further 28%.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the biggest increases were in hand saws (with a CAGR of +2.6%), while purchases for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, drilling or threading hand tools, household hand tools, screwdrivers, hammers and similar hand tools ($149M), hand saws ($90M) and hand-operated spanners and wrenches ($87M) appeared to be the most imported types of hand tools in the United States, together comprising 76% of total imports. Files, pliers, pincers, tweezers, metal cutting shears and similar hand tools, agriculture or forestry hand tools and sets of two or more tools lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.
U.S. Hand Tools Imports by Country
China (70K tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (47K tons) and Vietnam (8.5K tons) were the main suppliers of hand tools imports to the United States, together comprising 81% of total imports. Switzerland, India and Mexico lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 9.1%.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Switzerland (with a CAGR of +7.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, the largest hand tools suppliers to the United States were China ($148M), Taiwan (Chinese) ($102M) and Vietnam ($30M), together accounting for 65% of total imports. Switzerland, Mexico and India lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.
Switzerland, with a CAGR of +11.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
