Hemp Tow Prices in the United States

U.S. Hemp Tow Export Price per Ton in June 2022

In June 2022, the hemp tow price per ton stood at $5.4K (FOB, US), with a decrease of -37.8% against the previous month. In general, the export price saw a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 an increase of 75% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $15.0K per ton in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to June 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In June 2022, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($6.6K per ton), while the average price for exports to Japan ($2.2K per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to June 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Brazil (+44.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Hemp Tow Export Prices by Type

Average prices varied noticeably for the major types of exported product. In August 2022, the product with the highest price was hemp (cannabis sativa l.); processed (other than retted) (but not spun), true hemp tow and waste (including yarn waste and garnetted stock) ($3.6K per ton), while the average price for exports of hemp (cannabis sativa l.); raw or retted, but not spun amounted to $3.2K per ton.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: hemp (cannabis sativa l.); processed (other than retted) (but not spun), true hemp tow and waste (including yarn waste and garnetted stock) (-3.6%).

U.S. Hemp Tow Exports

In August 2022, hemp tow exports from the United States skyrocketed to 72 tons, increasing by 82% on the month before. Over the period under review, exports posted significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in February 2022 with an increase of 802% against the previous month.

In value terms, hemp tow exports expanded rapidly to $243K (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Overall, exports saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 with an increase of 327% month-to-month. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $305K. From June 2022 to August 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

U.S. Hemp Tow Exports by Type

Hemp (cannabis sativa l.); raw or retted, but not spun (51 tons) was the largest type of hemp tow exported from the United States, with a 70% share of total exports. Moreover, hemp (cannabis sativa l.); raw or retted, but not spun exceeded the volume of the second product type, hemp (cannabis sativa l.); processed (other than retted) (but not spun), true hemp tow and waste (including yarn waste and garnetted stock) (21 tons), twofold.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of export of hemp (cannabis sativa l.); raw or retted, but not spun totaled +40.0%.

In value terms, hemp (cannabis sativa l.); raw or retted, but not spun ($165K) remains the largest type of hemp tow exported from the United States, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by hemp (cannabis sativa l.); processed (other than retted) (but not spun), true hemp tow and waste (including yarn waste and garnetted stock) ($78K), with a 32% share of total exports.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the export volume of hemp (cannabis sativa l.); raw or retted, but not spun amounted to +12.5%.

U.S. Hemp Tow Exports by Country

Brazil (12 tons), Japan (9.8 tons) and Thailand (2.6 tons) were the main destinations of hemp tow exports from the United States, with a combined 98% share of total exports.

From January 2022 to June 2022, the biggest increases were in Brazil (with a CAGR of +18.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Brazil ($78K) emerged as the key foreign market for hemp tow exports from the United States, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($22K), with a 16% share of total exports.

From January 2022 to June 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value to Brazil amounted to +70.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Japan (+18.0% per month) and Thailand (0.0% per month).
