China Horsehair Import Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the horsehair price stood at $24.0 per kg (CIF, China), jumping by 16% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, saw a slight slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2022 when the average import price increased by 1,248% month-to-month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $28,552 per ton. From May 2022 to September 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($36.9 per kg), while the price for Kazakhstan ($360 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Afghanistan (+18.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Horsehair Imports
In September 2022, purchases abroad of horsehair decreased by -34.3% to 1.6K tons, falling for the fourth month in a row after two months of growth. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in May 2022 when imports increased by 587% m-o-m. As a result, imports attained the peak of 4.1K tons. From June 2022 to September 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, horsehair imports reduced markedly to $38M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. In general, imports recorded a slight decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2022 when imports increased by 1,842% against the previous month. Imports peaked at 83K tons in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to September 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
China Horsehair Imports by Country
In September 2022, Mongolia (1,000 tons) constituted the largest horsehair supplier to China, accounting for a 63% share of total imports. Moreover, horsehair imports from Mongolia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Turkmenistan (271 tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Kazakhstan (84 tons), with a 5.2% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Mongolia stood at -2.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Turkmenistan (+31.8% per month) and Kazakhstan (-6.1% per month).
In value terms, Mongolia ($37M) constituted the largest supplier of horsehair to China, comprising 96% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Peru ($610K), with a 1.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkmenistan, with a 0.7% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from Mongolia amounted to -1.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Peru (+17.5% per month) and Turkmenistan (+31.8% per month).
