U.S. Hot-Rolled Steel Products Import Price per Ton in July 2022
In July 2022, the hot-rolled steel products price per ton amounted to $1.3K (CIF, US), reducing by -4% against the previous month. Overall, the import price saw a slight decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in May 2022 when the average import price increased by 2% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $1.5K per ton in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to July 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Belgium ($2.0K per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($1.2K per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
U.S. Hot-Rolled Steel Products Import Prices by Type
Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was steel, stainless; flat-rolled, width 600mm or more, hot-rolled, in coils, of a thickness exceeding 10mm ($6.0K per ton), while the price for iron or non-alloy steel; in coils, without patterns in relief, flat-rolled, of a width 600mm or more, hot-rolled, of a thickness of less than 3mm ($1.1K per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by iron or non-alloy steel; flat-rolled, hot-rolled, rolled on four faces or in a closed box pass, of a width more than 150mm but less than 600mm, 4mm thick or more, not in coils, without patterns in relief (+11.7%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Hot-Rolled Steel Products Imports
In July 2022, overseas purchases of flat-rolled products of iron or steel (not further worked than hot-rolled) decreased by -6.1% to 412K tons for the first time since April 2022, thus ending a two-month rising trend. Over the period under review, imports showed a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when imports increased by 56% m-o-m.
In value terms, hot-rolled steel products imports fell to $542M (IndexBox estimates) in July 2022. Overall, imports recorded a pronounced contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 41% month-to-month.
U.S. Hot-Rolled Steel Products Imports by Type

From January 2022 to July 2022, the biggest increases were in steel, stainless; flat-rolled, width less than 600mm, hot-rolled, of a thickness of less than 4.75mm (with a CAGR of +57.2%), while purchases for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Hot-Rolled Steel Products Imports by Country
Canada (167K tons), South Korea (93K tons) and Mexico (77K tons) were the main suppliers of hot-rolled steel products imports to the United States, with a combined 82% share of total imports. Japan, the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the biggest increases were in the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +15.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Canada ($212M), South Korea ($116M) and Mexico ($102M) were the largest hot-rolled steel products suppliers to the United States, together accounting for 79% of total imports. Japan, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.
Germany, with a CAGR of +15.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
