U.S. Ice Import Price per Ton in August 2022
In August 2022, the ice price per ton amounted to $419.9 (CIF, US), picking up by 1.9% against the previous month. Over the last seven-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +3.2%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in June 2022 an increase of 14% month-to-month. The import price peaked in August 2022.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2022, the country with the highest price was Italy ($574.0 per ton), while the price for Canada ($225.0 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (+9.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Ice Imports
In August 2022, approximately 59K tons of ice were imported into the United States; picking up by 47% on July 2022 figures. Overall, total imports indicated noticeable growth from January 2022 to August 2022: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +2.5% over the last seven-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2022 figures, imports increased by +46.9% against July 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 with an increase of 48% month-to-month. As a result, imports attained the peak of 73K tons. From April 2022 to August 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, ice imports surged to $25M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. In general, total imports indicated a strong increase from January 2022 to August 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +5.8% over the last seven-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2022 figures, imports increased by +53.4% against May 2022 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
U.S. Ice Imports by Country
In August 2022, Fiji (44K tons) constituted the largest ice supplier to the United States, accounting for a 75% share of total imports. Moreover, ice imports from Fiji exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (6K tons), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Austria (5K tons), with an 8.4% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Fiji amounted to +2.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Italy (+8.8% per month) and Austria (+13.6% per month).
In value terms, Fiji ($18M) constituted the largest supplier of ice to the United States, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($3.5M), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Austria, with a 7.6% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from Fiji amounted to +4.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Italy (+18.3% per month) and Austria (+11.9% per month).
