China Iron and Steel Wire Export Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the iron and steel wire price amounted to $2,560 per ton (FOB, China), declining by -31% against the previous month. Over the period under review, export price indicated a moderate increase from January 2022 to September 2022: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +3.1% over the last eight-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2022 figures, iron and steel wire export price decreased by -33.4% against June 2022 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in April 2022 when the average export price increased by 27% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $3,846 per ton in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to September 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($5,051 per ton), while the average price for exports to Japan ($1,683 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Philippines (+6.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Iron and Steel Wire Export Prices by Type
Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was stainless steel wire ($4,146 per ton), while the average price for exports of steel alloy wire of silico-manganese steel ($1,067 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: iron or non-alloy steel wire, not plated or coated (+13.4%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Iron and Steel Wire Exports
In September 2022, overseas shipments of iron and steel wire decreased by -10.5% to 151K tons, falling for the third month in a row after four months of growth. In general, exports saw a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when exports increased by 52% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at 212K tons in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to September 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, iron and steel wire exports fell markedly to $388M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when exports increased by 85% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at 816K tons in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to September 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
China Iron and Steel Wire Exports by Type
Iron or non-alloy steel wire, plated or coated with zinc (56K tons) was the largest type of iron and steel wire exported from China, with a 65% share of total exports. Moreover, iron or non-alloy steel wire, plated or coated with zinc exceeded the volume of the second product type, steel alloy wire of silico-manganese steel (21K tons), threefold. Stainless steel wire (6.7K tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.9% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of export of iron or non-alloy steel wire, plated or coated with zinc totaled -3.2%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: steel alloy wire of silico-manganese steel (-2.0% per month) and stainless steel wire (-4.7% per month).
In value terms, iron or non-alloy steel wire, plated or coated with zinc ($181M) remains the largest type of iron and steel wire exported from China, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by stainless steel wire ($28M), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by steel alloy wire of silico-manganese steel, with a 9.2% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the export volume of iron or non-alloy steel wire, plated or coated with zinc stood at +2.1%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: stainless steel wire (-4.3% per month) and steel alloy wire of silico-manganese steel (-4.3% per month).
China Iron and Steel Wire Exports by Country
the Philippines (9.2K tons), South Korea (9K tons) and Thailand (8.8K tons) were the main destinations of iron and steel wire exports from China, with a combined 18% share of total exports.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the Philippines (with a CAGR of +1.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Philippines ($47M) emerged as the key foreign market for iron and steel wire exports from China, comprising 12% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($23M), with a 6% share of total exports. It was followed by the United States, with a 5.2% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value to the Philippines totaled +7.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (+3.6% per month) and the United States (+1.5% per month).
